DATHINI MZAYIYA

Dathini Mzayiya, born in 1979, currently occupies a studio space at OOVOOKOO Artists Studios, situated in the vibrant neighborhood of New Centre Selby, Johannesburg. His artistic journey has been enriched by numerous experiences, including serving as an artist in residency and being a National Research Foundation Fellow at Factory of the Arts, a prominent Flagship project of the Centre for Humanities Research (CHR) at the University of Western Cape (UWC). Additionally, Mzayiya has held esteemed positions as an artist in residence and board member at Greatmore Artists Studios in Cape Town and the Bag Factory Artists Studios in Fordsburg, Johannesburg.

Mzayiya's artistic education began at Community Arts Projects (CAP) in Woodstock, Cape Town, where he pursued the Advanced Programme in Visual Arts. Since then, his artistic career has flourished, and his works have been showcased nationally and internationally. Notable exhibitions include prestigious events such as the Investec Cape Town Art Fair and the Art Basel Miami Fair in the United States of America. His artistry has traveled far and wide, with exhibitions held in Germany, Switzerland, the Netherlands, Austria, Ethiopia, Tanzania, and many more.

Drawing upon a wide range of mediums, Mzayiya's artistic practice encompasses mixed techniques that span traditional painting, charcoal drawings, sound and video installations, mural paintings, and interdisciplinary collaborations. By embracing this diverse array of mediums, he weaves together intricate narratives and explores the boundaries of artistic expression. His creations invite viewers to immerse themselves in multisensory experiences that provoke thought, evoke emotions, and challenge preconceived notions.

Beyond his individual artistic endeavors, Mzayiya is a founding member of several significant art organizations and institutions. These include Factory of the Arts at the University of Western Cape, Visual Arts Network of South Africa (VANSA), Africa South Arts Initiative (ASAI), City Skin Public Art Design Firm, and Gugulective Artist Collective. Through his involvement in these collective initiatives, he actively contributes to the development and promotion of art within his community and beyond.
